Blepharoplasty: The Aftercare Guide

Blepharoplasty Dubai | 30 May 2019

Blepharoplasty – the surgical procedure of removing excess skin and fat around the eyes to remove eye bags and correct hooded, or drooping eyelids – is one of the simplest and most straightforward plastic surgery procedures you can have. It is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments which improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. A Blepharoplasty procedure can take as little as 30 minutes, but just as any other treatment or surgery, you’ll need to ensure that you follow all the aftercare instructions and advice (how to care for your eyes, medications to apply or take) to allow for a swift and smooth recovery.

What to expect following your Blepharoplasty procedure

Before you leave your cosmetic clinic, your cosmetic surgeon will go through Blepharoplasty aftercare guidelines with you and answer any questions you may have. Patient advisors should contact you regularly to follow-up on your progress and you should also be given 24-hour emergency numbers, to keep your mind at ease knowing that you can get in touch with your clinic whenever you feel the need to. On the day of your procedure, it is suggested that a family member or friend pick you up from the clinic and stay with you for the first 24 to 48 hours, until you are settled in and feel comfortable about acting autonomously.

While you’re comfortable at home, it is recommended that you follow the below general guidelines:

– Avoid lying down flat. By keeping your head elevated, you can reduce some of the swelling while also being more comfortable. Use 3-4 pillows when sleeping. A 45-degree angle is best and a travel pillow will provide support for your neck. During the first week, make sure to sleep on your back.

– Try not to bend forward or over for the next three weeks as this can increase swelling.

– For the first 24 hours, try and eat only liquid, nutritious food so as to exert your face as little as possible.

– DRINK WATER. We can’t stress enough how important it is for you to stay hydrated.

– Don’t skip any of your medication. It’s in your own interest to take it exactly as prescribed. When your pain lessens, you can switch to over-the-counter medicine like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

– Don’t remove any steri-strips. It might be slightly uncomfortable, but please try not to touch the crusting around your stitches.

– Quit smoking and alcohol for at least 6 weeks prior to surgery and 3 months after. That way you’ll be ensuring that your body’s healing ability is performing at full capacity.

– Contact lenses shouldn’t be worn for 2 weeks.

– Wait at least a week until you start driving again. Use common sense – if you have trouble seeing, don’t drive.

– Use an SPF 30 sunblock or higher, regardless of your activities or the weather as your skin will be sensitive.

– Don’t use any fragranced skincare products. If you feel the need to apply skincare products, do so cautiously and stay away from the incision areas to avoid infection.

– Don’t apply any makeup until at least a week after your stitches have been taken out and the wounds have sealed. It’s best to avoid applying it until your eyes have completely healed in order to avoid scarring and infection. Note that using new products will further lessen the risk of infection.

– Don’t do any exercise other than walking, which is necessary daily so as to prevent blood clot formation.

The healing process

Depending on your body, you will be advised to take around 1 week off work. It’s normal to experience some bruising and swelling during your initial healing process. This isn’t anything to be alarmed about, and your surgeon and aftercare advisor will talk you through how to control any discomfort. Very few of our patients report any pain experienced with the bruising. Despite it being a minimal procedure,  patients have expressed great joy at having opted for it. Women in particular, have been impressed at how much easier their morning routines are now that they can easily apply makeup, without having to deal with troublesome creases and folds. Most just tell of how much younger and more refreshed they feel thanks to these small tweaks.

What Are Dermal Fillers Used For?

Fillers in Dubai | 23 May 2019

Dermal fillers do not refer to a single production line, so there are differences in what parts of the face each and every one of them is meant to address. However, they all perform the same basic function at the end of the day – taking care of those lines and wrinkles that set in to depict aging on the face. For a more comprehensive list of where the known dermal fillers work on, we have:

– Nasolabial fold – those lines from the mouth to the nose

– Melomental fold – the lines from the mouth to the chin

– Lines occurring above the upper lip and

– Lines formed on the face due to frowns, among others.

– Besides the treatment of lines, though, dermal fillers have found application in other areas too.

For one, they are used to return volume to the cheekbones after they start sinking due to age. Furthermore, the lips have also started enjoying from the wide application of dermal fillers. Known to supply volume to thinner lips for a fuller feel, the level of safety they bring to this operation make them the ideal pick for many undergoing any of the procedures mentioned above.

What are the alternatives to tummy tuck?

Tummy Tuck Dubai | 20 May 2019

What are the alternatives to tummy tuck?

Although it’s not strictly an alternative, you might be able to have liposuction to reshape your abdomen. This is where your surgeon uses a special machine to suck out excess fat from under your skin. You can have it on its own instead of a tummy tuck, but it only removes fat, whereas a tummy tuck removes fat and skin. After liposuction, your skin will shrink back a little, if you’re younger and your skin is still quite elastic. But if you have loose skin or muscles before the operation, then liposuction alone won’t be effective. Liposuction might be helpful if you’re not generally overweight, but have localised areas of fat that you want to get rid of. If you have excess skin, liposuction alone won’t be effective. Liposuction may occasionally be an added part of a tummy tuck procedure. As with any medical procedure, liposuction can have side-effects and longer-term complications. Your surgeon will tell you about the potential risks and benefits of tummy tuck and any other treatment options available to you.

What happens during a tummy tuck?

Depending on how much fat and skin you’re having removed and the technique your surgeon is using, the operation can take between two and four hours. There are several types of tummy tuck. The one you have will depend on how much skin and fat you have removed. Your surgeon will discuss this with you and explain which type is most suitable for you and why. Occasionally, liposuction may also be done at the same time as your tummy tuck, but your surgeon will explain whether this is needed.

Standard tummy tuck

Your surgeon will make a cut in your abdomen from hip to hip along your pubic area (in women this is also called your bikini line). They’ll make another cut around your belly button to free it from the surrounding skin. Then the repair will tighten your abdominal muscles and remove excess fat and skin. The remaining skin is pulled down and a new hole is made for your belly button so that it is in the correct position. You’ll have a scar around your belly button and a long curved scar on your abdomen above your pubic area. Because of the normal pattern of pubic hair, the scar is generally higher in men than in women. You can usually hide these scars with your underwear or with swimwear such as a bikini or shorts, but this may not always be possible. This will differ from person to person and on the type of tummy tuck you have. Your surgeon will explain the scars you’re likely to have.

Mini tummy tuck

You can have a mini tummy tuck if you only need to have a small amount of skin or fat removed. Your surgeon will remove excess skin and fat from below your belly button and you usually have liposuction at the same time. Afterwards, you’ll have a curved scar on your abdomen above your pubic area. This may be slightly shorter than with a standard tummy tuck. Your belly button stays in the same place, but it may be a slightly different shape.

Blepharoplasty – Eyelid Lift Surgery & Recovery

Blepharoplasty Dubai | 17 May 2019

Eyelid Lift Surgery & Recovery

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, and typically lasts from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending upon whether or not you are having another procedure performed at the same time. Depending on the extent of your eyelid surgery, you will be given general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Most trained, board certified cosmetic surgeons today use advanced techniques that eliminate the need to bandage the eyes after surgery, although you may be given an eye lubricant that somewhat blurs your vision at first. When preparing for your surgery, it is a good idea to have some of your favorite music or audiobooks on hand to listen to as you spend the first few days resting at home. During the first 1 to 2 weeks after eyelid surgery, patients commonly have some visible bruising and swelling, and your eyelids may feel unusually tight. However, most patients report feeling more soreness than pain. Using cold compresses and keeping your head elevated while you sleep can help alleviate discomfort.

Life After Eyelid Surgery

Most patients feel well enough to make short trips (do not drive yourself until your cosmetic surgeon gives you clearance to do so) after about a week, and return to their jobs 10-14 days after an eyelid lift. It’s always important to follow your cosmetic surgeon’s instructions after any procedure, and after eyelid surgery you will have to make a few special but relatively simple modifications to ensure your newly rejuvenated eyelids heal optimally. Expect your eyes to get tired more quickly than usual for the first few weeks, and it’s important to let them rest as needed. If your job requires you constantly to be at a computer, consider resuming work part-time initially, then gradually increasing your workload as you continue to recover.

You must protect your eyes from the sun and wind. Wear dark sunglasses with frames that provide plenty of coverage whenever you go outdoors, and follow your cosmetic surgeons’ instructions about applying sunscreen after eyelid surgery. You will have to avoid lifting, straining, and bending down to pick things up for up to 4 weeks after eyelid surgery. This can be an inconvenient restriction, but it is crucial that you do not induce sudden increases in blood pressure until your incisions have healed adequately.

Keeping Your Results Looking Their Best

With a healthy lifestyle and good skincare habits, the results of cosmetic eyelid surgery should last for years.  With the excess, sagging skin gone, your eyes will always look better refreshed and more youthful than they would have without an eyelid lift. Likewise, if you have lower eyelid surgery, those puffy eye bags will be gone. While nothing can stop the normal aging process, your results will age naturally with you.

You can keep your eyes looking more youthful by wearing sunscreen daily, becoming or remaining a non-smoker, and practicing good nutrition and health habits. Non-surgical treatments, such as Botox or filler injections or skin resurfacing, can also help you touch up your youthful appearance by smoothing wrinkles around the face and eyes. Your cosmetic surgeon can recommend the treatment options that will best meet your needs.

Dermal Fillers – What to Expect During Treatment

Fillers in Dubai | 16 May 2019

What to Expect During Treatment

Dermal filler injections are non-surgical and typically completed during an office visit. Your initial treatment will begin with a consultation, during which you will meet with your cosmetic surgeon to discuss your concerns and goals.

Pre-treatment consultation

During your consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will evaluate your area of concern and review your medical history. While the risks associated with dermal fillers are minimal, you need to fully disclose your medical history prior to treatment, as certain allergies, skin and neurological conditions, or medications can jeopardize your safety or results. For instance, you need to tell your cosmetic surgeon if you have been taking NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) or blood thinners, as these increase the likelihood of bruising.

Your injectable filler treatment

Just before the actual treatment, the area will be cleaned, and you may be given a topical anesthetic to numb the area prior to injection. Many filler products also contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic, which is intended to help minimize discomfort during and after your treatment. Your provider will then inject a precise amount of filler strategically beneath the skin. Depending on the product and the areas treated, you should be able to notice results immediately after receiving filler injections. Some patients experience mild bruising and swelling, but these are temporary and should subside over the days following treatment. You will be able to go back to your normal activities right after treatment, but your cosmetic surgeon may ask you to take the day off from exercise or other strenuous activity.

If you are having fat injections

Facial fat grafting is a surgical procedure and follows a different treatment protocol. Typically, fat grafting is performed as an outpatient procedure, using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Up to 2 weeks of downtime may be required, depending on the extent of liposuction performed. Your cosmetic surgeon will go over what to expect with surgery and recovery during your consultation.

Preparing for a Tummy Tuck

Tummy Tuck Dubai | 14 May 2019

Your surgeon will explain how to prepare for your operation. For example, if you smoke you will be asked to stop up to eight weeks before your surgery. Smoking increases your risk of getting a chest and wound infection, which can significantly slow your recovery. Coughing from a chest infection will make recovery much more painful. Smoking also reduces the amount of blood that reaches your skin, which means your wounds may heal more slowly.

Your surgeon may also advise you to:

– lose excess weight – you should be as close to the ideal weight for your height as possible before your operation

– stop taking the contraceptive pill four to six weeks before your operation, to reduce the chances of a blood clot (thrombosis) – make sure you use an alternative method of contraception

You have tummy tuck surgery under a general anaesthetic. This means you’ll be asleep during the operation. Before a general anaesthetic, you are normally asked not to eat or drink for six hours beforehand. Your surgeon or anaesthetist will give you specific advice on what you may or may not eat or drink and for how long before the operation.

Your surgeon will make sure you understand what will happen before, during and after your operation. They’ll also explain what to expect when you wake up and what level of discomfort or pain you might have. This is your opportunity to ask any remaining questions you have about the risks, benefits and alternatives to the procedure. This will help you to be informed, so you can give your consent for the operation to go ahead. You’ll be asked to sign a consent form. Your surgeon may ask you to wear compression stockings from the time of your operation until you are fully up and about again. This helps to prevent blood clots forming in the veins in your legs.

Forehead and brow rejuvenation

Cosmetic Surgery Dubai | 12 May 2019

The brow lift is the method of choice for rejuvenative surgery of the upper third of the face. It can revitalise the entire forehead, smooth out frown lines and wrinkles, and restore the position of the eyebrows. A brow lift will also raise and tighten loose skin of the upper eyelid and open up the eyes. Although the forehead is much less prone to ageing and gravitational descent than the mid and lower third of the face, it is sometimes necessary to include the forehead in combination with eyelid surgeries or a facelift as part of a complete facial rejuvenation. Since the brow and forehead are close to the eyes, most concerns related to this zone stem from sagging brow tissues that in some way affect the eye area; either by drooping skin reducing the size of the eyes, heavy brows affecting their appearance or by physical impairment of upper eyelid function. The second most frequent concern relates to folds and frown lines in the central part of the forehead, which may communicate a heavy or fatigued appearance.

Reasons for lifting the forehead and brow tissues include reversal of the gradual age-related droop (ptosis) of soft tissue which is a natural process of facial ageing, though more pronounced in some individuals. Secondly, brow lifts can be used to adjust a congenitally low and heavy brow and correct asymmetry (due to conditions such as facial palsy where lack of muscle function will result in an asymmetric sagging of forehead soft tissue).

Forehead and brow rejuvenation

Forehead and brow rejuvenation is customised to suit individual features: lifting of the brow, repositioning of descended tissues, adjustment of skin, and modulation of the muscle function responsible for lines and creases. The forehead, brow and eyes are areas where gentle adjustments can lead to major improvements. A lift of just 4-6 mm is often sufficient to open up the eyes and restore the youthful position of the eyebrows. Forehead rejuvenation usually requires lifting the outer half of the brow, as the mid-section is anatomically more stable and less prone to gravitational descent. A delicate upwards curve of the brow is aesthetically appealing. The overall aim is to position the outer part (end point) of the brow slightly higher than the inner part (the start point) with a gentle arch in-between.

Benefits of BOTOX for Facial Rejuvenation

Fillers in Dubai | 8 May 2019

BOTOX® is one of the most effective cosmetic treatments for wrinkled facial skin. Most adults begin to experience dynamic wrinkles, which are the wrinkles that form when the facial muscles are contracted. The relaxing or pulling of the skin surface causes the formation smile lines and crow’s feet around the corners of the eyes and mouth. Thinning skin that is no longer retaining moisture and has less collagen is more easily wrinkled, and the appearance of these smile lines can have a negative effect on one’s appearance. No surgery, no chemical peels and no abrasive resurfacing are involved.

Benefits of BOTOX®

BOTOX® doesn’t treat the skin directly. Rather, it inhibits transmission of signals from the nerve endings to the upper-level facial muscles. This means that smoothing of the skin surface is realized without the need for surgery or any sort of skin repositioning. Another benefit of this treatment is that it actually trains the muscles to stay relaxed. The effect of BOTOX® lasts for anywhere up to six months. During this time, the facial muscles that control our appearance when we smile or frown never contract fully. Subsequent treatments typically use less of the fluid because the muscles stay in a relaxed state. BOTOX® doesn’t paralyze the muscles or deaden the nerve endings in the skin. This means that the individual won’t be overcome by a feeling of numbness, and it’s just as easy to frown, smile and laugh as it was before the treatment was administered. The only difference is that these expressions won’t result in wrinkles.

How It Works

I always consult with our client before administering this treatment. I look at the face closely and note the appearance of dynamic wrinkles when certain facial expressions are made. This helps me determine the best injection sites and the best amount of solution to use for the treatment. BOTOX® is injected just beneath the skin and directly into the upper-level muscle tissues. The treatment begins to work almost immediately, so you may see some results just after receiving your injections. However, the real results show themselves in the following days. After a few days, clients notice that the skin around the mouth or eyes no longer wrinkles when smiling or frowning occurs. This effect alone can make the individual look much younger. Injections can be repeated at regular intervals. If you are in generally good health, you will likely make a good candidate for this treatment.

A beautiful neck contour is not just merely related with youthful look, but also with vitality and overall well being

Cosmetic Surgery Dubai | 6 May 2019

Performed as an isolated procedure or integrated within a facelift surgery, a neck lift will correct one of the earliest age-related concerns. A number of different techniques can be combined to suit each individual, allowing for a comprehensive recontouring and rejuvenation of the neck. A defined neckline gives an attractive and appealing appearance and conveys a sense of health, fitness and vitality. Changes to the neck and lower jawline are the most obvious and earliest signs of facial ageing and usually one of the main objectives for patients seeking facial rejuvenation. Some patients may present with hereditary problems of their neck contours and seek an early aesthetic improvement, which may not necessarily be related to ageing. A neck lift, also known as a platysmaplasty, can restore neck contours by modifying the underlying muscles (platysma), redraping skin, interrupting vertical neck bands and removing excess fat. Neck lifting can be performed as an isolated procedure or integrated with a facelift. In both cases it will provide a more youthful and defined appearance to the neck and jawline. Each patient will present with a different set of anatomical concerns, these generally fall into two main categories: (1) a heavy and full neck (often hereditary), or (2) a neck with age-related changes such as skin laxity, skin creases, jowls, vertical muscle bands (platysma bands) and accumulated sub-platysmal fat. In both cases there are several effective options for shaping and rejuvenation of the neck.

Isolated neck lift

The isolated neck lift is suitable for patients who want to treat their neck specifically and have no concerns with the face. This procedure is usually indicated for younger patients and men who generally do well with an isolated neck lift rather than a full facelift. The isolated neck lift is designed to reshape an undesirable neck appearance, often by reducing volume and achieving a sharper and more defined angle between the jaw and neck (cervicomental angle). This is achieved by reducing fat in the deeper layers of the neck and adjusting the platysma muscle position. Removal of superficial fat (liposuction) and/or the placement of a chin implant for further improved definition of the chin and jawline, may also be indicated. Access to and modification of the neck tissues are achieved by an earlobe-based incision (behind the ear) and if required, combined with a discreet incision in the crease below the chin (submental approach).

Integrated neck lift

The integrated neck lift is appropriate for a generalised rejuvenation of the face. A two-layer SMAS face-neck lift procedure will provide rejuvenation of the entire face from the corner of the eyes down to the collarbone, this includes the mid-face, cheeks, jawline and the neck. In the ageing neck, the aim is a restoration of a youthful and aesthetic contour by repositioning sagging tissues, tightening the neck muscle (platysma) and removing accumulated fat and loose skin. Access to and modification of the neck is achieved via the facelift incision located in front and behind the ear.

Several components in the neck can be treated to achieve the desired results. The neck tissues consist of superficial fat, deep fat (sub-platysma fat), muscle (platysma), deeper neck muscles and the overlying skin. Because there are wide variations in neck anatomy among individuals, it is necessary to customise the surgery for each patient. During consultation, I will examine the neck, measure facial proportions and discuss individual requirements and goals, in order to formulate an effective treatment plan. Patients can generally determine in what anatomical plane their problems are located, by actively tightening their flat platysma muscle; if their concerns are mobile and located above the muscle (as a double chin), superficial adjustments may be sufficient to address their concerns. If undesirable full contours are located below the muscle, deeper adjustments are required.
