Open Your Eyes to the Benefits of Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty Dubai | 30 November 2019

Eyelid surgery, also known as a blepharoplasty, is a common cosmetic surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of drooping or sagging eyelids. It can also relieve any issues caused by excess skin around the eyes. It’s a relatively simple and minor procedure, but many people are understandably nervous about having surgery near their eyes. Specialising in all aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive eye surgery, Dr. Matteo Vigo is perfectly placed to explain everything you need to know about having a blepharoplasty.

Why do some people need or want eyelid surgery?

As we age, the skin around our eyes and eyelids can become droopy or saggy. This causes eye bags or hooded, heavy eyes. Some people also have pockets of excess fat around their eyes that can lead to the same tired looking, droopy eyelids. Excess skin around the eyes can also be caused by long term allergies or infections stretching the skin, or by smoking or being exposed to the sun for long periods of time. Sometimes, this excess skin can be heavy, making it difficult to open the eyes, which can affect the vision. Other times, some people simply don’t like the look of their droopy eyelids. Either way, surgery to remove excess skin or fat from the eyelids, called a blepharoplasty, can help, either medically, cosmetically, or both.

What kind of anaesthetic is used during eyelid surgery?

A blepharoplasty can be carried out under a local anaesthetic alongside a sedation. This means that your eyelids will be numbed and although you’ll be awake, you’ll feel relaxed and drowsy. It can also be carried out under a general anaesthetic where you’re asleep for the whole procedure. You’ll be able to discuss your options, your preferences and your surgeon’s preferences with your surgeon at your pre-operative assessment. Most of the time, you’ll be able to return home on the same day as your surgery.

What does eyelid surgery involve?

Depending on whether you’re having upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery or both, a blepharoplasty involves your surgeon removing the excess tissue that is making your eyelids appear heavy, tired or droopy.

What is upper eyelid surgery?

An upper blepharoplasty is carried out on the upper eyelids to help improve the tone and tightness of the skin between the eyebrows and the upper eyelashes. It will help to minimise excess skin that can cause the upper lids to appear heavy and creased. I will make an incision in the skin of the upper eyelid where the skin naturally creases, to minimise scarring. They will then remove the excess tissue that is causing the heavy eyelids (this can be fat, muscle or excess skin) before closing the incision using small stitches. These stitches are designed to dissolve or fall out over the weeks following surgery. Upper eyelid surgery usually takes around an hour.

What is lower eyelid surgery?

A lower blepharoplasty is carried out on the lower eyelids to help correct loose, drooping skin and eye bags between the lower eyelashes and the tops of the cheeks. It can also help to correct darker, crepey skin and puffiness under the eyes.

Gynaecomastia – Symptoms, diagnosis and treatment

Cosmetic Clinic Dubai | 24 November 2019

Some men find that one or both breasts may be abnormally large. Known as gynaecomastia, this condition can result from a hormone imbalance or from being very overweight, which can increase levels of oestrogen and cause breast tissue to grow. Breast reduction surgery is an option for men with this condition. It may also be used to tighten the breast area after dramatic weight loss that has caused the skin to sag. However, it is not suitable for men whose large breasts are simply excess fat from being overweight. Gynaecomastia is the benign (non-cancerous) growth of male breast tissue and can be due to a number of causes. It may be due to hormone imbalance or as a consequence of medication you are taking. It can also be due to alcohol excess or recreational drug abuse. I will discuss the cause of your gynaecomastia with you. Along with causing swelling of the breast and nipple, gynaecomastia can be uncomfortable and the nipple can become sensitive.

How can gynaecomastia be treated?

Some cases of gynaecomastia will get better without any form of treatment. If one of your medications is thought to be causing the gynaecomastia, it may improve with changing or stopping a particular tablet. Whilst gynaecomastia itself can be uncomfortable and unsightly, it is not dangerous and no harm will come from having it. When cancer has been ruled out, many men are happy to have no treatment. Another form of treatment is to have medication. These medications are often good at reducing discomfort and sensitivity but may not reduce the size of the breast. The third form of treatment involves surgery to your breast.

Surgical treatment of gynaecomastia

There are three main surgical procedures which can be undertaken:

Liposuction

Liposuction is used to remove the fatty tissue under a general anaesthetic. Small incisions (cuts) are made on the chest wall. A small metal tube (cannula) is used to suck out the fatty tissue. The incisions are then sutured to give a flatter, firmer and better-contoured chest. Any stitches will be of the dissolving type and so do not need to be removed.

Excision of gynaecomastia

In excisional surgery, i will make a cut around the nipple to remove the breast tissue. This may be combined with liposuction of the breast tissue at the same time.

Male breast reduction

If the breast is very large more tissue and skin may have to be removed. This will give more scars. The degree of scarring will depend on how much skin needs to be removed. I will advise you about this.

After surgery

After surgery for gynaecomastia your breasts will look discoloured and feel firm and swollen. Bruises can occur. You may need to have a drain (a fine plastic tube) inserted into the breast during the operation. This will be removed by the breast care nurses seven days after your operation. You should be able to go home the same day. You may be advised to wear a corset for up to four weeks after the operation to help with the swelling. You will not be able to drive home after your operation and it may be two to three days before you can drive.

The dressings can be removed after 7-10 days and you should be able to return to work after one weeks. For the first three weeks after the operation, don’t lift anything heavy or do heavy manual work. Most men resume normal activities within two to three weeks.

Follow up

You will be given an appointment to return to the clinic in 7-10 days where the dressings and drain(s) will be removed and the wounds inspected. You will also be reviewed after your surgery once the bruising and swelling has completely settled.

Long term outlook

If liposuction is performed and only fat is removed, weight gain can make the gynaecomastia return. If the breast tissue itself is removed, as in the excision surgery or male breast reduction there is a chance the breast tissue can regrow. You will have medical photography before and after surgery of your chest. There will be nothing which will identify you to anyone else on these and they are used as a record of your treatment.

Benefits of Abdominoplasty When Diet & Exercise Aren’t Enough

Abdominoplasty Dubai | 23 November 2019

Sometimes, a healthy diet and regular exercise routine just aren’t enough when it comes to achieving the slimmer, more toned midsection you desire. Despite counting calories and spending long hours in gym, many women and men find that the abdomen and surrounding areas remain resistant to change, which is often a discouraging reality. In several instances, the reason for this lack of toning and refinement has to do with the presence of excess skin and/or stretched abdominal musculature, both of which cannot be fully improved with diet and exercise alone. This is particularly common among women who have had one or more pregnancies, as well as individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight.

For men and women struggling to attain a firmer, more youthful-looking midsection, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) can often provide the following benefits:

A reduction in excess abdominal skin and localized fat pockets (via liposuction)

Tightening of loose and/or stretched abdominal muscles

Smoothing and tightening of skin in the lower stomach and abdomen

An improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe stretch marks

A correction of hernias near the bellybutton

A more toned and slender abdominal region and waistline

In the end, none of this is to say that tummy tuck surgery is a good alternative to diet and exercise – it should certainly not be viewed this way. However, when combined with a nutritious diet and routine exercise, abdominoplasty may be able to help you address the final concerns that are keeping you from achieving your desired figure.

Dermal Fillers – The Non Surgical Facial Rejuvenation Treatment

Cosmetic Clinic Dubai | 22 November 2019

Although no one likes the thought of aging, we can be thankful that we are living in this modern age when there are more facial cosmetic procedures than ever before to aid in the battle against time. Injectable fillers are not only effective, they are a completely safe method of rejuvenating the face. Even in the past 10 years, there have been advancements in the science of fillers, and my clinic offers several different approved brands. The most popular are Juvéderm, Profhilo, Restylane, Radiesse, Teosyal and Neauvia. The area of the face that requires filling determines the type of filler that he chooses. Some fillers have a thicker consistency than others and are more suited to areas where more substance is needed to achieve the desired lift. It is possible to fill nasolabial folds (lines between the nose and mouth), cheekbones, noses, chins, tear troughs, jowls, and lips.

CONTOURING AND REFINING FEATURES

When injected by an experienced professional, fillers also have the ability to contour and refine features. Lips can be augmented to reduce the lines that appear with aging, and small noses can be enlarged so that they balance nicely with other facial features. A flat chin can be injected with filler to provide a symmetrical profile. Fillers can provide a straighter nose for people who have a hump in the middle. Cheek bones can be injected to provide a natural-looking lift to the face. Although amazing results can be achieved with injectable fillers, it is the artist in control of the needle who determines the final outcome. It takes artistry, not just a licence, to sculpt the face in perfect harmony and proportions.

Not only can fillers be injected in a short period of time, but there is also little discomfort for the patient. Local anaesthetic is administered prior to the injections, and some brands even have the anaesthetic combined with the filler. Slight swelling or redness at the injection site may be experienced, but this is minimal, eliminating the need to take a few days off of work to heal. Another major benefit of injectable fillers is that they are affordable. Great results can be accomplished without breaking your pocket book.

THINGS TO KNOW IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING DERMAL FILLERS

Whether you are considering getting dermal fillers to smooth out wrinkles or enhance facial contours, a quick look at some criteria and facts will help you know you have come to the right place for your treatment.

Dermal fillers should be injected only by an experienced and qualified medical doctor. This procedure requires qualifications, experience, and an artistic edge, because 90% of the success of cosmetic procedures depends on who is doing them. For example, a bad haircut would indicate the level of experience of the stylist, not the scissors that were used. This is why it is extremely important to inquire about the credentials of your practitioner and ask to see before and after pictures. Getting a consultation first is advisable, as you would get a chance to see my facility and raise your questions or concerns with me.

YOUR EXPECTATIONS

Bringing a picture of your younger self to your appointment is helpful. However, bringing a picture of your favorite celebrity is not conducive. While you may see one aspect or feature of your face, it is important to know that a face has to be analysed in whole and not in part. The aim of the injectable procedure is to look naturally enhanced. It is also important to understand that each face has its own asymmetry. A good doctor can help bring more symmetry while keeping the overall aesthetics of the face visually pleasing. So make the most of your consultation by being open to recommendations. Your doctor sees in three dimensions, and you would benefit from exploring all your options.

THE ACTUAL PRODUCT

There are many types of dermal fillers on the market. But the most common of them are hyaluronic acid (HA) products. They have proven to produce natural and lasting results while maintaining fluidity to move with facial expressions. This line of dermal fillers also incorporates antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins to deliver further treatment benefits while filling and contouring the face.

HOW LONG THE RESULTS WILL LAST

Hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers also naturally occurs in the body and therefore gets metabolized eventually. Depending on the dermal filler chosen and whether or not this is the first time you are having a filler injected, you can expect results to last anywhere from 3 to 6 months. If for some reason you are not satisfied with the results, which is very rare, HA fillers are also dissolvable at your request by injecting an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE AND AFTER THE INJECTION

It is always best to schedule your injectable appointments a couple of days to a week prior to any major event. With dermal filler injections, you will also need to take bruising and swelling into account. You can reduce this likelihood by stopping any supplements that can act like blood thinners such as fish oil and also some pain killers such as Aspirin, Aleve, Advil, etc., 2 weeks prior to your appointment.

After your dermal fillers treatment, follow the post-care instructions given, which include applying cold compresses, avoiding extremely cold or hot drinks, sun exposure, extreme temperatures, excess facial mimicry, and vigorous exercises. Being gentle is key.

Blepharoplasty – The Many Benefits Of Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty Dubai | 20 November 2019

Eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, can offer patients a number of benefits ranging from aesthetic enhancements to the correction of vision problems. In some procedures and situations, it can even offer migraine relief. This is one of the most common plastic surgeries in the world and has benefited thousands of men and women.

As everyone’s anatomy is unique, no two blepharoplasty procedures are ever conducted exactly the same. During your initial consultation, you’ll be able to find out exactly how this common procedure can benefit you specifically, and you’ll also have the opportunity to have all of your questions answered. For now, let’s examine some of the most common benefits of eyelid surgery.

Benefit 1

Eyelid Surgery Can Provide a More Youthful Appearance

Because the goal of eyelid surgery is to reduce the amount of excess skin on and near the eye, patients typically enjoy a more youthful appearance after the procedure. Additionally, bags and dark circles under the eye can be removed with blepharoplasty, which we’ll explore in more detail below.

Benefit 2

Eyelid Surgery Can Make You Look Less Tired

Blepharoplasty will reduce the amount of excess skin that contributes to bags and puffiness under the eyes, which can often lead to looking tired or “stressed” even when you aren’t. After the procedure, most patients will find that they now look more awake and refreshed. Many patients also choose to have eyelid surgery in addition to a browlift, which can further promote a youthful, refreshed appearance, as the eyebrows will be raised and the amount of lines, wrinkles, and creases visible in the forehead will be reduced or eliminated. Both procedures are typically performed at the same time to reduce the amount of downtime that a patient experiences afterwards.

Benefit 3

Double Eyelid Surgery Can Add a Fold to the Upper Eyelid

Double eyelid surgery, or Asian blepharoplasty, is intended to add a fold to the upper eyelid. Because roughly 50% of all Asian people naturally have this upper eyelid fold, many Asian patients would like to have it also. The addition of a fold can be an aesthetic enhancement as well as a functional one. Many Asian women find that applying makeup is substantially easier with an upper eyelid fold.

Benefit 4

Eyelid Surgery Can Reduce Migraines

In some cases, specially placed incisions can reduce the occurrence of migraines for some patients. These incisions are placed to prevent “trigger” nerves from causing migraines, and for many patients has led to not only a substantial reduction in the pain of a migraine, but the complete abatement of migraines overall.

Benefit 5

Eyelid Surgery Can Correct Vision Problems

Did you know that blepharoplasty isn’t just a cosmetic surgery for many patients? For those with upper eyelid skin that droops down into the field of vision, this common plastic surgery can correct vision problems associated with excess skin while also promoting a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

Abdominoplasty Dubai | 18 November 2019

When it comes to a tummy tuck, i frequently explain to patients that the procedure is not a single surgical step, but rather a series of elements that can be combined to create customized results.

Whereas liposuction focuses solely on removing unwanted fat cells from the body – such as those that create a noticeable bulge at the belly – a tummy tuck is intended to create sleeker contours by addressing any number of conditions that keep the abdomen from looking toned.

Excess fat

Of course, stubborn pockets of fat are an obvious culprit when it comes to a larger waistline. While liposuction is frequently performed as a standalone procedure, it can also be used as part of a tummy tuck to help flatten the area. For this element, just about everything is handled as it would be for a solo lipo procedure: fat is loosened and suctioned out via a cannula. The difference is that while liposuction requires small incisions that are later sutured closed, the incision made for a tummy tuck allows the surgeon access.

Excess skin

While extra fat causes bulges, extra skin creates a sagging pouch that can hide even well-defined abdominal muscles that sit beneath. The amount of excess tissue can range from a little to a lot (sometimes referred to as an “apron”). For a tummy tuck, the surgeon essentially re-drapes the abdominal skin so that it sits flat and tight, then trims away the excess. The incision and subsequent sutures for this element are typically hidden lower on the torso, where they can be covered by a swimsuit bottom or underwear.

Lax muscles

Over time, belly muscles and their covering fascia can become loose. Whereas firm fascia holds everything in place – something like interlaced fingers keeping a water balloon from bulging outward – lax fascia allow the contents behind to bulge outward. Abdominal muscles can separate, giving the entire midsection a flabby look. During a tummy tuck, a surgeon can, if necessary, stitch these muscles and fascia back together to make everything tight and toned. In some cases, as with a mini-tummy tuck, this may be the primary element of the procedure. It is often chosen by moms who have a small bulge that sits below the belly button.

Belly button placement

Depending on the tummy tuck details, the surgeon may need to “relocate” the belly button, which involves creating a hole in the newly taut abdominal skin so the navel appears where it should to remain proportional with the rest of the body. This is called “umbilical translocation.” Following this, the body can be further contoured to encourage an hourglass shape by creating an “internal corset.” I have performed measurements that show narrowing of the waist and improvement of the waistline due to work at this stage.

When all of the steps are completed, the incision will be closed with either a special glue or absorbable sutures, such that the patient can take a shower the next day and there is no need to remove the sutures. Lasers can be used post-operatively to hasten the healing of scars. Also, use of exparel injections numb the abdomen for three days, which can minimize pain for patients.

Since every patient has a unique body shape and size, as well as personal goals for an ultimate look, each tummy tuck is its own procedure. While there are commonalities between all such surgeries, no two will be exactly alike.

The most common form of tummy tuck involves a horizontal incision near the pubic hairline, so swimwear or undergarments can hide the resulting scar. If there is excess skin above the navel, an incision around the navel may be required. Sometimes, the surgery involves liposuction to remove pockets of excess fat from specific areas of the body. To reduce scar tissue and increase the speed of healing, i may utilize a harmonic scalpel that uses ultrasonic energy to perform parts of the tummy tuck surgery. Diastasis is a term used to describe the separation of the two-paired abdominal muscles that make up the front of the abdomen, which is often caused by multiple pregnancies. Sutures are used to tighten up the abdominal wall, resulting in a flatter stomach. Stronger, tighter abdomen muscles may also help reduce lower back pain.

A tummy tuck is not a shortcut to weight loss. But, it can be a powerfully transforming surgery and complements the impact that weight loss has on the abdominal profile. Many of our patients say they feel liberated after having a tummy tuck. They can wear a bikini again, or not wear a shirt or a top to cover up their loose stomach. They feel good about being outdoors running, swimming and golfing. It does a lot to boost a person’s confidence in their bodies and for many of my patients, it’s an incentive to maintain a healthy appearance for the rest of their lives. For some patients, tighter abdomen muscles may also help reduce lower back pain.

Types of tummy tucks

Depending on the patient’s aesthetic objective, plastic surgeons will recommend one of the following three types of tummy tucks available:

Full or classic tummy tucks

Classic tummy tucks (which are also referred to as full tummy tucks) are utilized when individuals want to address the sections above and below their belly button, the full length of the abdominal wall. Patients who opt for a full tummy tuck often want to resolve general roundness and excess skin. With this procedure, one horizontal or u-shape incision, and possibly a second incision, are made above the pubic area and the belly button, respectively, to remove excess skin and tighten muscle. Full tummy tucks present the most natural-looking outcome, and can include a much firmer abdomen.

Mini tummy tucks

Mini tummy tucks involve less extensive incisions compared to a full tummy tuck and are intended to improve only the lower belly, below the patient’s belly button. This makes the procedure ideal for people who want to rid their bellies of a “pooch”, tiny bulge or stretch marks in the lower abdominal region only. Plastic surgeons can tighten loose muscles through a single low horizontal incision (typically without an incision around the belly button), and remove excess lower abdominal skin, resulting in a firmer, smoother lower belly.

Extended tummy tuck

The extended tummy tuck is considered when the goals of the procedure are to address the abdomen while simultaneously targeting the flanks and hips. To perform this procedure, the surgeon extends the horizontal incision more laterally as well as often incorporating a longer, vertical incision, which enables the surgeon to remove excess skin from the upper and lower abdominal region as well as the flanks while tightening the abdominal wall. This procedure is often ideal for those patients who have had multiple pregnancies or have lost lots of weight, either through diet and exercise or through weight loss surgery.

Determine which procedure is right for you

Deciding which procedure is right for you will be contingent upon several factors and is best done in consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon. Some of them include your desired results, overall skin quality, body type and location of excess skin on the body. The amount of excess skin will also determine which procedure is most appropriate. Finally, any scarring attained from a previous cosmetic procedure or surgery can determine which kind of tuck the patient qualifies for.

Recovery

You’ll want to figure out a time frame for your recovery so you have ample time to heal and can take a break from certain aspects of your life. Make sure you make the proper arrangements and are fully prepared for your recovery period.

Your drains will be left in for a few days after the surgery. You’ll be shown how to take care of and empty the drains. You’ll likely need to take an antibiotic and an anticoagulant while your drains are in place.

You’ll wear an abdominal binder for about six weeks. This helps to avoid fluid buildup and helps to support your abdomen.

While the recovery period is usually shorter for a mini-tummy tuck, you’ll still need to avoid strenuous activity for at least six weeks. This includes any vigorous exercise or heavy lifting.

What to expect after your surgery

I will properly brief you about how to recover at home.

You will be guided:

How to care for incisions and drain tubes

What to be aware of in terms of infection or overall health

What to avoid in terms of physical activity that affects your incision line for six weeks

When you need to see me again

How long to wear the abdominal pressure garment

How much to rest

What you can eat

You’ll need to have someone who can drive you home from the hospital and help take care of you for at least the first few days after your surgery. You can shower few hours after you remove your drainage tubes. You may want to take a sponge bath until you can shower. You may be advised to use a chair when showering for some time.

You’ll be prescribed an antibiotic and possibly an anticoagulant. You may be given some type of medication to apply to the skin. Take any pain medication as directed. You shouldn’t take any medicine containing aspirin unless directed by your doctor.

You should also avoid alcohol if you’re taking pain medication, and avoid any form of nicotine for at least six weeks. Smoking can hinder the healing process and may cause complications.

Blepharoplasty: everything you need to know about eyelid surgery

Blepharoplasty Dubai | 16 November 2019

The eyes have a dramatic impact on appearance and can let others know how we feel – whether we are happy, sad, angry, or tired. They are one of the first things we notice and they have a great deal to do with how others perceive us as they glance at our facial features. Eyes with excessive or sagging skin are frequently associated with a perception of old age (even when they occur in a young per-son) and tiredness.

Unfortunately the eyes are often one of the first areas on the face to show tell-tale signs of aging. Over time, the eyelids may begin to droop and sag. Bags can form under the eyelids making it hard to feel alive and vibrant. The loose skin over your eyes and the fat bags under your eyes may be making you look more tired and older than you feel inside.

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is an operation (actually, a set of operations) for your eyelids designed to maintain the appearance of your eyes. Surgery of the eyelids, blepharoplasty upper and lower, can correct sagging eyelids, remove fatty pouches beneath the eyes and remove excess skin from the upper eyelids.

The result is a brighter, more alert, and rested appearance.

WHAT IS AN EYELID SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY)

Blepharoplasty is an operation performed on the eyelids (upper, lower or both) which involves the removal of skin and soft tissue, resulting in a fresher more youthful appearance to the eyes and entire face.

The blepharoplasty procedure is done to reduce the heaviness around the eyes. This appearance can be associated with skin, fat, and muscle excess both to the upper and lower eyelids leaving patients with a tired appearance even though may feel well rested. Blepharoplasty is often done as an elective surgery for cosmetic reasons. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty seeks to improve puffy lower eyelid “bags” and reduce the wrinkling of skin.

Blepharoplasty is sometimes needed for functional reasons. When an advanced amount of upper eyelid skin is present, the skin may protrude over the eyelashes and causes a loss of peripheral vision. The outer and upper parts of the visual field are most commonly affected and the condition may cause difficulty with activities such as driving or reading. In this circumstance, upper eyelid blepharoplasty is performed to improve peripheral vision.

HOW IS EYELID BLEPHAROPLASTY PERFORMED?

The surgery is performed under local anesthesia with or without IV sedation. Because of the facial anatomy changes from one individual to another there is not one procedure that suits every individual. Each operation is customized to suit the individual’s anatomy and the desires of the individual. In general terms, the following principles apply to blepharoplasty surgery.

For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is made in the natural skin fold. Excess skin is removed and a conservative amount of orbicularis muscle is removed. Although it is traditionally advocated to remove eyelid fat during the blepharoplasty procedure, I believe that in many cases the fat can be repositioned and contoured as opposed to completely removed. This more modern approach to blepharoplasty leaves the eyelids looking more youthful and avoids the hollowed sunken surgical look of years gone by.

For lower eyelid surgery, the incision can be internal or external. Through the incision on the inside of the eyelid (trans-conjunctival) fat tissue is removed as required. If excess skin removal is required this can often be accomplished by a well concealed incision placed laterally. The skin is closed with very fine sutures.

If the excess skin is enough I always prefer to approach the surgery with the external scar, which is placed very close to the eyelashes line, and will be extended sometimes in the lateral area of the eye. With this technique, you can address at the same time the extra skin and the fat bags, targeting also an excess of the orbicularis muscle and remove it.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Do you look tired even though you aren’t? Is the skin of your upper eyelid overhanging the normal lid crease and starting to impinge on the eyelashes? Are there bulges and bags where there shouldn’t be? Do your eyes appear smaller than they did in years past? If you have answered yes to any of these questions you might be a good candidate for blepharoplasty.

The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for an eyelid tuck is to book a consultation to make sure that you are a suitable candidate for surgery at the time of your consultation. The ideal candidate for a blepharoplasty is someone who has developed noticeable pockets of fat in the lower lids, or excessive, redundant skin in the upper lids. Anyone with signs of aging in the upper or lower lids may benefit from blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty may be also be used to improve sight by removing excess skin out of the patient’s field of vision.

Eyelid blepharoplasty can make a remarkable difference in the appearance of your face, alleviating the appearance of tiredness and old age. Your eyes appear fresher and more youthful and these results may last for many years. The degree of improvement varies from patient to patient.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT THE CONSULTATION?

I will discuss the degree of change you would notice in your appearance. The procedure and its risks and limitations will be explained to you. Your medical history will be reviewed and then I will examine the skin and fat around your eyes. Your eye sight, peripheral vision and tear ducts might be checked if necessary.

HOW LONG DOES THE SURGERY TAKE?

The procedure general takes 60-90 minutes depending on whether upper or lower eyelids are done.

WHAT WILL I FEEL DURING THE PROCEDURE?

Initially you may feel a tight sensation around the eyes, with minor discomfort that lasts for a day or two. A mild pain reliever can be taken as needed. People who have had the procedure are often surprised at how painless eyelid surgery can be.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER SURGERY?

You will be given an instruction sheet to take home with you, which will outline the steps you should take to care for your eyelids after surgery. The first evening after surgery, you should rest quietly with you head elevated. Cold compresses are to be used as per the instruction sheet provided.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PERIOD LIKE?

At first the incisions will probably be red and somewhat bumpy. Eventually the resulting scar should become flat and inconspicuous. The swelling and discoloration around your eyes will gradually subside, and you will start to look and feel better each day. Swelling and bruising varies considerably from person to person. Stitches will be removed after 7 days.

The scars are usually minimally visible even if sometimes an extension in the lateral part of the eye is needed and this scar can remain more visible than the others.

Bruising typically disappears within 7-10 days. After the first week you will be permitted to use makeup, if desired, to conceal any discoloration. Your vision might be blurry for a few days. Your eyes may be temporarily sensitive to light, and you may experience excess tearing or dryness. You need to avoid wearing contact lenses for the first week. You might also consider wearing dark sunglasses for a couple of weeks to protect your eyes from wind and sun irritation. The eyes may tire easily for several weeks.

HOW LONG DOES THE SURGERY LAST?

Following blepharoplasty surgery the face will have a more youthful appearance and in many cases the eyelids feel less heavy. The results generally last 10 to 15 years and the surgery usually does not need to be repeated.

HOW PRECISE IS THE RESULT?

There is no such thing as a perfect operations and no surgeon is perfect. No individual has perfect pre-existing anatomy and no skin wound heals without some degree of scarring. A mild degree of asymmetry between eyelids is the rule, rather than the exception. A realistic expectation from the surgery would be an 80% improvement in the upper eyelid appearance and a 70% improvement in the lower eyelid appearance.

PRP Therapy for Skin Rejuvenation

Cosmetic Clinic Dubai | 14 November 2019

Cosmetic PRP Therapy Treatment is an effective treatment for several conditions and has been successfully used to improve skin and hair conditions. I provide the following PRP treatments: PRP hair regeneration and PRP skin rejuvenation. PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is not for everyone. Certain medical conditions and use of certain medications may make your platelets less effective.

WHAT IS PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is obtained from your blood and injected into your tissue wherever tissue regeneration is needed. Over the last decade, autologous PRP has been successfully and extensively used in sports medicine to regenerate tendon injuries, muscle injuries, worn out cartilage in aging joints; in general surgery to promote faster healing of large surgical scars and in the field of cosmetic and anti-aging medicine for skin rejuvenation and hair regeneration.

Autologous PRP provides a safe and very effective regenerative treatment option but unfortunately not everyone is a candidate for PRP cosmetic regenerative treatments. Below are some of the absolute and relative contraindications to PRP treatments:

Absolute Contraindications to PRP Regenerative Therapy:

Platelet dysfunction syndrome

Critical thrombocytopenia – very low platelet count

Hemodynamic instability – very low blood pressure

Septicemia or local infection to injection site

Relative Contraindications to PRP Regenerative Therapy

Aspirin and other NSAIDs use within one week of the PRP therapy.

Corticosteroid injection at treatment site (1 month)

Systemic use of corticosteroids (2 weeks)

Cancers (hematopoetic-blood or bone)

HGB < 10g/dl or platelet count < 105/ul

I do not want you to stop taking your aspirin or blood thinner medication if you are taking these medications for heart condition and for stroke prevention. If you are taking any of the medications for a serious medical illness, you will need to pause the medications under your physician’s care and obtain a medical clearance letter before your PRP therapy.

Cosmetic PRP Therapy Treatment harnesses the healing ability of your blood to regenerate healthy new tissue in the treatment area for natural improvement of common skin concerns and thinning hair.

CLINICAL RESEARCH ON PRP TREATMENT EFFICACY FOR SKIN AND THINNING HAIR

Platelet Rich Plasma is obtained by processing your blood in a centrifuge to get a concentrated mixture of your platelets. Platelets are small cells in your blood that are responsible for your body’s healing response to injury. Upon any injury, your platelets release a minimum of eight growth factors which initiate a cascade of events leading to regeneration of healthy tissue to repair the injured area. High-quality PRP leads to the appropriate growth factor release which results in healthy tissue regeneration for rejuvenated skin and thicker hair when injected in these sites.

PRP THERAPY FOR SKIN

Cosmetic regenerative PRP therapy provides growth factors from your own blood to optimize your wound healing and is used for several non-surgical cosmetic skin treatments to enhance the results of your cosmetic skin treatment. I love the natural results from regenerative PRP skin treatments for improvement of several common cosmetic skin problems such as; skin aging, acne and other scars, stretch marks, melasma and other hyperpigmentation disorders. I often combine your PRP with different types of skin treatments specific to your needs to help you achieve your personal best for your skin needs.

PRP SKIN SURFACE REJUVENATION AND PHOTODAMAGE REPAIR

PRP injection into the dermis (middle layer of skin) and application of PRP topically with Micropen microneedling skin treatment may improve skin surface aging, fine lines, pigmentation, texture and skin tone.

PRP SKIN TIGHTENING AND PRP DEEP WRINKLE REDUCTION

To address the signs of deeper skin aging such loss of skin elasticity, deep wrinkles and folds, which present as jowls, sagging of the eyelids, sagging of the skin below the chin, deep nasolabial folds and so forth, I recommend a deeper skin tightening and collagen building treatment. The injection of PRP into the dermis and application of PRP topically with the MFR skin treatment can improve skin tightness, build collagen to lessen the appearance of deep wrinkles, deep folds, jowls, tighten the neck skin and lift the eyelids.

PRP WITH DERMAL FILLERS FOR VOLUME ENHANCEMENT

For areas with mild to moderate volume loss below the skin such as the age-related thinning of the back of hands, deep under-eye circles and loss of facial volume, PRP injections below the dermis can be combined with a dermal filler for volume replenishment. The advantage of PRP is that the regenerative response of your body leads to an improvement in the skin texture, firmness and tightness with healthy new tissue along with the volume that is replenished with the dermal filler. I see this effect most noticeable in the under eye area.

PRP STRETCH MARK TREATMENT

Stretch marks are common in women and men of all ages. Stretch marks can present on many areas of the body such as tummy, thighs, buttocks etc due to a rapid increase in size such as rapid growth during puberty, increase in size during pregnancy and with a sizable weight gain. Stretch marks are like dermal scars in many ways and can be reduced in the same way as dermal scars. best treatment results are achieved with early intervention. For most individuals with stretch marks, I recommend a series of 3-5 treatments with PRP injection and PRP topical application with one or two of the microneedling sessions.

HOW IS THE REGENERATIVE PRP SKIN THERAPY DONE?

Treatment with PRP can be completed in less than 30 minutes. When you arrive, a small vial of blood is drawn, similar to the volume required for routine blood work. The blood is then spin in a centrifuge to separate the growth factors, and platelets from the rest of the blood. Once this unique mixture is obtained, it can be injected directly into the targeted areas or applied through micro needling.

Before your Cosmetic PRP Therapy, you will have a thorough consultation where I will evaluate your medical history for appropriateness of the cosmetic PRP treatments and discuss your goals and expectations for the treatment.

PRP HAIR LOSS THERAPY

PRP hair loss therapy is an effective treatment option for increasing hair density in individuals with certain types of hair loss disorders*

PRP hair loss therapy alone is effective in improving hair density and quality when injected into the scalp of men and women with early and mild androgenic alopecia and with telogen effluvium (after correcting the triggers of telogen effluvium). PRP hair loss therapy is effective in increasing hair density and hair quality in individuals with more advanced androgenic alopecia and androgenic alopecia lasting longer than 5 years. PRP hair loss therapy alone does not lead to hair regeneration in individuals with advanced hair loss with scarring and those with complete loss of hair follicles.

*Individual results vary with genetic, hormonal, environmental and other influences

What You Need to Know About a Tummy Tuck Surgery

Abdominoplasty Dubai | 8 November 2019

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is an operation to remove excess fat and skin from your abdomen (tummy) and to tighten your abdominal muscles. The results of a tummy tuck can be long lasting. You can help this by keeping to a healthy weight after your surgery.

There are lots of reasons why people have this type of surgery, including having weaker abdominal muscles after pregnancy or having previously lost a lot of weight.

You should always meet the surgeon carrying out your procedure to discuss your care. It may differ from what’s described here as it will be designed to meet your individual needs.

PREPARING FOR A TUMMY TUCK

I will always explain how to prepare for your operation. For example, if you smoke you will be asked to stop up to eight weeks before your surgery. Smoking increases your risk of getting a chest and wound infection, which can significantly slow your recovery. Coughing from a chest infection will make recovery much more painful. Smoking also reduces the amount of blood that reaches your skin, which means your wounds may heal more slowly.

I may also advise you to:

– lose excess weight – you should be as close to the ideal weight for your height as possible before your operation

– stop taking the contraceptive pill four to six weeks before your operation, to reduce the chances of a blood clot (thrombosis) – make sure you use an alternative method of contraception

You have tummy tuck surgery under a general anaesthetic. This means you’ll be asleep during the operation. Before a general anaesthetic, you are normally asked not to eat or drink for six hours beforehand. I will give you specific advice on what you may or may not eat or drink and for how long before the operation.

i will make sure you understand what will happen before, during and after your operation. They’ll also explain what to expect when you wake up and what level of discomfort or pain you might have. This is your opportunity to ask any remaining questions you have about the risks, benefits and alternatives to the procedure. This will help you to be informed, so you can give your consent for the operation to go ahead.

I may ask you to wear compression stockings from the time of your operation until you are fully up and about again. This helps to prevent blood clots forming in the veins in your legs.

Tummy tuck surgery or abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure requiring some preparation to help ensure a safe and smooth surgery and recovery. I can offer a list of do’s and don’ts to be followed as part of preparation. I am an experienced plastic surgeon providing tummy tuck and other procedures to patients in Dubai and surrounding locations.

Do’s

Create a Strong Support System around Yourself

When you undergo tummy tuck surgery, chances are that you may experience severe emotional ups and downs or mood swings. These emotions can range from a feeling of depression to elation. You should enlist the support of close family and friends who can devote some time and effort to take care of you.

Stay Committed to the Healing Process

Tummy tuck procedure will involve at least one to two weeks of downtime, depending on the surgical technique. It will take another several weeks for the swelling to subside completely and for the patient to feel completely “normal” again. Patience, focus, and follow-ups are essential through this journey for a sound and sustainable recovery.

Get Involved in Healthy Relaxation Activities

Read books and magazines, surf the Internet, watch movies at home and perform mild household activities in the first two weeks after tummy tuck surgery. Do not return to work too early, and maintain a relaxed schedule for a few days.

Maintain Close Communication with the Surgeon

Prior to the tummy tuck surgery, you should share all relevant health information, habits and other concerns frankly with me. After the procedure, if you experience any abnormal pain or other signs, or have any doubts, do not hesitate to speak with me.

Eat a Healthy, Protein-rich Diet

Prior to abdominoplasty, start taking a high protein diet about two to four weeks in advance. Continue this diet even after the surgery for a few weeks under the guidance of a nutritionist. Make sure you are not constipated and avoid any crash dieting.

Don’ts

Use Any Form of Tobacco

If you consume tobacco in any form, stop using it at least four to six weeks before and after the tummy tuck surgery. Smoking and other forms of tobacco will create poor healing, and may increase the risk of bleeding during surgery.

Avoid Rapid Weight Loss

If you have been trying to lose weight through special crash diet formulas, weight loss drugs or other means, you will have to stop it several weeks prior to the surgery. Maintain a stable, healthy body weight as far as possible before tummy tuck surgery.

Don’t Use Herbal Meds and Aspirin

Stop the use of any blood thinners such as aspirin or motrin at least two weeks before tummy tuck surgery. If you are taking herbal medications, vitamin E supplements, or certain prescription drugs, they may have to be stopped as well.

Be Regular on Your Bowel Regimen

Eat plenty of fibrous foods and natural fruit and veggies, exercise daily, and stay regular on your bowel regimen prior to the tummy tuck surgery. In case you get constipated following the surgery from medications and the anesthetic, you can tolerate it for a while until your mobility improves.

Arrange for Transportation and Aftercare

Arrange in advance for someone to drive you back home after the tummy tuck procedure, and if needed, hire some help for a few days during post-operative recovery.

What You Need to Know About PRP Injections for Hair Loss

Cosmetic Clinic Dubai | 5 November 2019

Are you looking for a hair loss solution? A therapy that promotes healing in injured joints may help restore your lost hair.

Millions of men and women have male- or female-pattern baldness. It can begin early in life, but is much more common after the age of 50, when more than 50 percent of men will experience some kind of hair loss. However, an emerging treatment — platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy — appears to help regrow lost hair. And, there are virtually no side effects from PRP, except for a mild feeling of pressure at the injection site.

HOW DOES PRP THERAPY WORK?

Physicians began using PRP therapy about a decade ago to speed up the healing process in damaged joints after injury or surgery. During the treatment, a technician draws your blood and spins it in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets and plasma. Doctors then inject the plasma, which helps repair blood vessels, promote cell growth and wound healing, and stimulate collagen production.

Doctors began using PRP in dermatology after researchers found that high concentrations of platelets in plasma cells help promote hair growth by prolonging the growing phase of the hair cycle. Doctors inject plasma into the scalp where hair loss has occurred. They typically administer injections monthly for three months, then spread them out over about three or four months for up to two years. The injection schedule will depend on your genetics, pattern and amount of hair loss, age and hormones.

HOW DOES PRP THERAPY COMPARE WITH OTHER OPTIONS?

Other treatments for hair loss currently on the market are often more problematic for many patients. There are two medications for treating hair loss: finasteride and minoxidil. But you must take these drugs consistently over time and results are inconsistent. Each drug also sometimes has side effects:

• Minoxidil may cause dryness and itching on the scalp.

• Finasteride may cause sexual dysfunction in men.

RESEARCHERS SEE PROMISING RESULTS

Recent research bears out the potential of PRP therapy. In a 2014 study, researchers looked at men with male-pattern baldness who used both approved medications, but saw little change in their hair growth. After four PRP treatments, they had about 30 percent more growth in thinning areas. A 2017 study out of Italy also found male patients had increased hair and density in areas where doctors used PRP therapy.

It takes about three months to see an improvement. After that time, most patients – both male and female – have regrown 30 to 40 percent of the hair they’ve lost.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR PRP THERAPY?

Part of the success of PRP comes from selecting the right patients for therapy, PRP is safe and effective for many people. However, you should not have PRP therapy if you fall into either of these groups:

• If you have an underlying disorder such as thyroid disease or lupus, you aren’t likely to have good results because these conditions will continue to cause hair loss over time.

• If you are on blood thinners, your platelets won’t work as effectively and the procedure is not as effective.

PRP therapy works better if your hair loss is recent. It is more challenging to “wake up” hair follicles that have been dormant for a long time.
